Founded in 1949, The College Basketball Observer is the longest running alternative college basketball news outlet in North America and the second oldest in the world. The Observer is known worldwide for regularly publishing both cutting edge breaking news as well as erudite insights from our veteran newsroom.

  • Samuel Friedman

    WRITER & CO-EDITOR

    Samuel is a veteran sports journalist specializing in Mid Major Hoops. Graduating from Kent State University in 1970 with a degree in Criminal Justice, he opted to pivot careers straight out of school and got his start as a copy editor at the Kent Reporter. He has been a Head Writer and Co-Editor of The Observer since 2005, where which he has accrued many accolades, including a Pulitzer for his hard-pressing and unique reporting style.

  • Douglas Weinvoss

    WRITER AND CO-EDITOR

    Doug is a Dartmouth graduate and former head writer of the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern who has written for countless serious publications and news outlets on the topic of college basketball since 1977. He joined the Observer in October of 2001 after winning The Myron Award for investigative journalism for his groundbreaking work in Syracuse in the 1990’s. He currently lives in Irvine, California with his wife and three children. Does not own an account on X.
